Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has indicated that the distribution of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme will proceed once additional information from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) regarding its investigation into the initial allocation of 4,000 flats is provided.
In a recent announcement, the Housing Ministry stated that the flats would be allocated following legal consultation. The Ministry further asserted that misinformation circulating on social media platforms about the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme aimed to tarnish its reputation.
The ministry revealed that preliminary findings from the ACC were shared on Thursday, prompting discussions between ministry officials and ACC members on Sunday. In a video statement, Dr. Haidar conveyed his request for the report from the ACC during the meeting, noting the ministry’s commitment to expedite the allocation process to eligible applicants.
Despite the ministry’s proactive measures, the distribution of flats remains pending until the ACC furnishes a detailed report.
The ACC received 325 complaints following the release of the list of beneficiaries for the initial 4,000 flats, part of the scheme developed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) in Hulhumale’. Previously, the ACC had suspended the allocation of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme due to reported irregularities, with the suspension lifted on February 1.
The ACC’s directives to the Housing Ministry included revising flagged applications without altering those already approved according to ACC policies and criteria, ensuring consistent decision-making where policies lack explicit guidance.
Furthermore, amidst rumours circulating on social media alleging the involvement of First Lady Sajidha Mohamed in drafting beneficiary lists, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu refuted these claims, affirming his administration’s commitment to fair and transparent allocation processes.
Meanwhile, the ACC has initiated an investigation into potential irregularities surrounding land allocation under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme, another housing initiative launched in the previous administration.
