The EPA was officially renamed as the ERA on 12 August. Following the change, the authority announced the vacancy for its head on Sunday, setting the deadline for applications at 14:00 on 26 August. The position carries a basic monthly salary of MVR 20,500 and a living allowance of MVR 15,000, bringing the total remuneration to MVR 35,500.

Before his appointment, Hassaan Mohamed served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Environment and worked as a lecturer at the Maldives National University. He holds an engineering degree from the University of Queensland in Australia and has studied at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands.

The post was previously held under the title of director, a position last occupied by Ibrahim Naeem.

The recent restructuring of the EPA into the ERA has raised concerns among environmentalists as well as some former leaders and ministers.
