Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has denied allegations of illegally selling parking spaces in Hulhumalé, condemning what it described as misleading reports and stating that those responsible will be reported to the relevant authorities.
In a press release, the corporation said it has been working to address the shortage of parking in Hulhumalé and had opened applications for a “pocket parking” scheme, under which parking spaces are leased to eligible applicants.
HDC added that it had published details of applicants who met the required criteria based on a points system.
The response follows a report by Adhadhu alleging that more than 600 parking spaces had been sold at prices ranging between MVR 35,000 and MVR 50,000. The report also claimed the sales were conducted on government instruction to raise funds for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) ahead of elections held on Saturday.
Local council, Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and referendum elections are scheduled to take place on April 4.
