The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to undertake large-scale tree planting across the islands under its management as part of a broader environmental initiative.

In support of this effort, the L. Gan Island Council has allocated 100,000 hectares of land for the establishment of a large-scale nursery. This facility will provide the necessary resources to sustain HDC’s greening projects.

The decision was confirmed during a consultation meeting between the L. Gan Island Council and HDC’s Managing Director, Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, during his visit to the island. Following the discussions, Mauroof conducted an inspection of the designated land.

HDC’s nursery in L. Gan will play a key role in President Mohamed Muizzu’s nationwide programme to plant five million trees. As part of this initiative, HDC has committed to planting one million trees within its areas of jurisdiction, contributing significantly to the national reforestation efforts.

The trees cultivated in the nursery will be distributed and planted across various islands managed by HDC, including Rasmale, Kuda Giri, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu.

HDC formally pledged its participation in the national tree-planting programme during the second anniversary celebration of Kuda Giri Picnic Island last Saturday.
