Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel has said he plans to continue in an advisory role with the company even after his retirement.

Yesterday, local media outlets reported that HDC’s MD Mauroof had planned to step down from his role as managing director and into an advisory role next month. In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM) last night, Mauroof explained that he took on the managing director’s role last year while already in semi-retirement, with no long-term intention to remain in the post. However, he expressed his desire to continue contributing to HDC’s goals in an advisory capacity.

“My intention is to work in an advisory role. In an advisory role, it will be easier on my body as well. That’s why I want to stay in such a role,” he said, adding that he does not intend to leave the company entirely and remains committed to supporting Hulhumalé’s development.

When asked why he accepted the position so close to retirement age, Mauroof said he had specific short-term goals he wanted to achieve—most of which he believes he has accomplished. These included addressing the lack of facilities in the population-dense Hulhumalé Phase II and improving harbour usage. With the recent launch of the new land-use plan for Hulhumalé, he said these targets had been met.

Mauroof accepted the position following what he described as an extraordinary request from the President, noting it was a rare opportunity to return to a project he helped initiate over two decades ago.

“I knew it would be a demanding role, and I also knew I wouldn’t be able to stay long due to my age,” he said.

Appointed Managing Director of HDC on 22 December 2024, Mauroof stepped in after the resignation of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who left amid an ongoing corruption investigation.

Prior to HDC’s formation, Mauroof served as Director General of the Hulhumalé Development Unit, later taking on senior roles at both HDC and the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC). As Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure, he led major national projects and played a key role in preserving the Maldives’ architectural heritage, with a strong emphasis on sustainable development.
