Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced that the installation of additional elevators in four of the Hiyaa Towers will be completed within the next two months.

According to HDC, efforts are ongoing to install additional lifts in all sixteen towers. The foundations for the lifts have been laid across all buildings, and installation work is in progress.

Residents of the Hiyaa Towers have long raised concerns about the limited number of lifts in each 25-storey building, which has caused significant inconvenience, particularly for those on the upper floors. To address this issue, HDC awarded a contract in February last year to China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co., Ltd for the installation of additional lifts.

The first four towers where the installation will be completed are H1 to H4, with each receiving two additional lifts. HDC has stated that work on these towers will be finished before the end of April. However, no completion date has been announced for the remaining towers.

Former HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed previously stated that the installation of the 32 additional lifts would cost USD 18 million (MVR 278 million).

Each tower will have one lift capable of accommodating a stretcher, while the others will have a capacity of 14 people.

Most Hiyaa Towers currently have three lifts, with some having four. However, residents argue that this is insufficient to meet the needs of the approximately 40,000 people living in the complex.
