The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced it will begin verifying cases of Gedhoruveriyaa social housing apartments being leased to third parties in violation of tenancy agreements.
According to HDC, the Gedhoruveriyaa flats were allocated at subsidised rental rates to ensure access to housing for individuals without adequate accommodation. The corporation stated that subleasing these units to others breaches the agreement signed between tenants and HDC.
The company said inspections will be carried out to identify any ongoing third-party leasing. If such violations are confirmed, appropriate action will be taken as stipulated in the agreement.
Subleasing of social housing apartments has been a recurring concern. The latest incident involved a three-room apartment developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) – not yet officially handed over — being advertised for rent at MVR 25,000, more than double the subsidised rate of MVR 11,500.
Both FDC and the Ministry of Housing have stated that legal measures will be pursued against individuals found to be renting out subsidised social housing units.
