The Ministry of Health has announced that more than 4,000 students have been screened for Thalassemia as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at increasing awareness about the genetic disorder.

Since the campaign’s launch in February, a total of 4,004 students have undergone screening for Thalassemia, the ministry confirmed. Alongside these screenings, awareness sessions were held across schools, engaging 124 parents and 198 students. Awareness programmes were also extended to several ministries and administrative offices to broaden public understanding of the condition.

The campaign, which commenced on 4th February, was introduced with the goal of reducing the birth rate of children affected by Thalassemia by educating both students and parents on the disorder. The first phase of the programme was rolled out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Maldivian Blood Service (MBS), with students from Arabiyya School leading the way as the first group to participate.

The initiative highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle Thalassemia through early screening and comprehensive public education.
