Heavy rains yesterday flooded the streets and homes in the capital Male displacing atleast five households.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 34 people from five households had to be moved to temporary housing after their homes were critically damaged from flooding. The flooding caused sewage to leak into their homes making them inhabitable, NDMA said.
The families who have been displaced are being taken care of, NDMA assured, noting that it would provide food as well as other assistance required for the children sitting for school examinations today.
According to the Maldives Meterological Service (MMS), Male experienced 103.5 millimetres of rain yesterday.
The heavy rain caused the streets to flood, leading to houses and businesses being at risk of flooding. Police and army were also deployed to help respond to flooding incidents reported across the capital.
NDMA said it received reports of flooding from over 85 places on Saturday. Over 495 sandbags were placed in 79 locations to keep the water at bay.
Police urged the public to refrain from taking out the trash and driving four-wheelers as the streets were heavily flooded. The floods caused traffic problems leading to the public buses to change routes from the most affected areas.
Meanwhile, army personnel from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) were deployed to pump out the water from the flooded streets and help put up sandbags.
