The government has announced that the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal will be opened to public ferry operators, following a directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The harbours of Male’ City are the busiest in the country, with hundreds of vessels docking and departing daily. Space constraints remain a key challenge for loading and unloading goods, as well as for boarding and disembarking passengers. The issue is particularly concerning for ferry and launch operators, especially during school holidays and other significant periods when travel to the atolls increases.
Due to the limited docking space, vessels are often moored behind one another, making it difficult for passengers to board and disembark, particularly for elderly individuals and people with disabilities. This practice also raises safety concerns.
In response, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to open the Henveiru and Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminals to public ferry operators. MTCC has invited interested parties to express their interest via email before 14:00 on 10 March and may be contacted for further information.
The decision to open the two terminals, which were previously reserved for MTCC use, is expected to ease congestion at Male’ harbours and improve safety and accessibility for passengers. It is also anticipated to reduce traffic in the surrounding lagoon.
