The Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka has confirmed that assistance has been provided to three Maldivian families affected by the heavy rain and flooding resulting from Cyclone Ditwa. The support follows severe weather that has caused widespread disruption across Sri Lanka in recent days.

High Commissioner Mas’ood Imad stated during the “Ceylon Aa Eku Dhivehin” telethon that although rainfall has eased, authorities in Sri Lanka continue to warn of further flooding and potential landslides. He said the three Maldivian families lived in areas considered at risk and had been relocated as a precaution, with their situation now being closely monitored by the embassy.

The High Commission has launched emergency relief efforts as part of its wider response to the cyclone’s impact. A special call centre has been set up to streamline reports from Maldivians requiring support and to help the mission track developments. The embassy has already begun distributing essential supplies, including food and water, to Maldivians across affected regions, with assistance also extended to students in Colombo and surrounding areas.

Efforts are underway to support Maldivian nationals stranded at Bandaranaike International Airport after severe weather led to multiple flight cancellations. The mission is working to identify those affected and arrange appropriate assistance.

Beyond its support for Maldivians, the High Commission is preparing to deliver humanitarian aid to Sri Lankan communities hit hard by the flooding, reflecting ongoing solidarity between the two countries.

Amid continuing hazardous conditions, the mission has issued a public advisory urging Maldivians in Sri Lanka to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Citizens have been encouraged to remain indoors during periods of heavy rain and strong winds and to follow guidance issued by the Sri Lankan Meteorological Department. Those needing assistance have been advised to contact the High Commission through its dedicated hotline.
