In a statement issued yesterday, the High Court emphasised its jurisdiction to address election-related grievances during the initial stages, in accordance with the General Election Act. As a result, measures have been put in place to ensure accessibility for individuals seeking to file election complaints concerning the upcoming Saturday’s election.
To facilitate the submission of complaints, the High Court’s counter will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 0900 to 2200 hours. Additionally, commencing on Monday, the Court counter will operate from 0900 to 1500 hours on all days, except Fridays, until the deadline for electoral complaints has passed.
The High Court has urged individuals to ensure that all necessary information is included when filing electoral complaints, including the grounds for the complaint, detailed information about the issue, and any evidence relevant to the case.
It is essential to note that, as per legal provisions, the deadline for filing election cases at the High Court is a maximum of 14 days after the official announcement of election results. This time frame includes holidays and weekends.
In a move towards greater convenience, the High Court has also set up an email channel at registration@highcourt.gov.mv to enable online filing of election-related complaints.
Furthermore, the High Court has emphasised that electoral complaints may be submitted outside of the specified counter hours. Members of the public are encouraged to file complaints or seek clarifications by contacting the Court directly at 7902206.
