High Court Unanimously Overturns Bribery Conviction of Yoosuf Naeem

The High Court judges’ bench has overturned the bribery conviction of Yoosuf Naeem in the lease of Vaavu Atoll Aarah, in a unanimous decision today.

Previously, the Criminal Court had found Naeem, the former Felidhoo MP, guilty of bribery in a case involving former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Naeem was handed a guilty verdict on December 25th, 2022, on bribery charges and was sentenced to three years, two months, and 12 days in jail.

Following the conclusion of the appeal hearing in the High Court, the verdict was delivered by the upper court this afternoon.

The judges’ bench acknowledged several mistakes made in the case and ordered the Criminal Court to reopen proceedings.

After delivering the verdict for Naeem, the court adjourned for a 30-minute recess and will reconvene at 16:00hrs.
