Judge Mohamed Niyaz, the longest-serving judge at the High Court, has retired from the High Court.
The High Court on its social media announced that today is the last day of the office for Judge Niyaz.
Judge Niyaz, who resigned from his position as Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) last month, submitted his retirement application from the Court last month as well.

The exact reason for Judge Niyaz’s request to retire is unknown. However, it is believed that he made the decision after serving as a judge for a long time and taking his health into account. However, while JSC has decided to accept Judge Niyaz’s retirement, the commission is currently investigating five disciplinary cases against him. The cases are long-standing and have been addressed by the commission in the past.
Judge Niyaz retired after 23 years of service in the judiciary. He was first appointed as a judge on September 30, 2002, at the Vaikaradhoo Court.
Judge Niyaz, who studied law at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, was appointed to the High Court in January 2018.
Niyaz’s retirement came after a high profile Judge Mohamed Faisal’s resignation last month amid JSC’s investigation. Allegations against Faisal have appeared on social media over the past two days.
