Minister of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, Dr Maryam Mariya, has assured the public that student loans granted by the previous government will not be revoked.

In an exclusive interview with Adhadhu Media, Minister Mariya emphasised her commitment to maintaining the student loans initiated by the prior administration. Despite the large-scale distribution of loans to numerous students simultaneously, she underscored her promise not to retract these financial aids.

Addressing concerns about potential saturation in specific fields due to the high number of students receiving loans, Minister Mariya asserted that all students, regardless of their field of study, would receive comparable education and training.

This year, the government had initially announced 720 student loan opportunities. However, following applications, the decision was made by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to extend loans to all eligible students. This decision will benefit a total of 1,225 students under this year’s scheme, including 479 aspiring pilots.

Acknowledging concerns about potential job market saturation, Minister Mariya highlighted that students seeking a change in their field of study could apply to the Ministry of Higher Education. She assured that the ministry is committed to providing diverse opportunities for students.

To address potential job market challenges, the ministry plans to introduce career guidance units, offering job opportunities to students. Minister Mariya outlined the government’s goal to create opportunities for Dhivehi children through these units.

Importantly, students studying under these loans are not bound to serve the country, providing them with the flexibility to pursue opportunities abroad after completing their education.
