The Ministry of Higher Education has opened applications for the government loan scheme, offering financial assistance for higher education in the Maldives and abroad.
According to the ministry, 500 loan opportunities have been made available under this scheme. The loans will be provided in two categories: new students who are beginning their education and students who are already enrolled in higher education programmes requiring additional funding through top-up loans.
For this round, the top-up loans will be issued for amounts not exceeding MVR 700,000. This opportunity aims to assist students who were unable to complete their programmes within the designated timeframe due to circumstances beyond their control under the Higher Education and Training Loan Assistance. Additionally, it seeks to support students in completing mandatory internships linked to their completed programmes.
New students are defined as those who have not yet registered at a higher education institution or paid tuition fees by the application deadline. Continuing students eligible for top-up loans are those who have already commenced their studies before the deadline.
Applications for the loan scheme will be accepted until 30 April.
In a separate announcement, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that the one percent administrative fee currently charged on student loan repayments will be removed.
