The Ministry of Higher Education has stated that arrangements are underway to cover the newly introduced tax in Malaysia affecting Maldivian students enrolled at private educational institutions.

This comes after the Malaysian government announced a new policy under which a 6 percent service tax will be imposed on foreign students studying courses with fees exceeding MYR 60,000.

The tax applies to students attending private colleges, universities, preschools and other private educational institutions.

According to the Ministry, funds allocated for Maldivian students in Malaysia and other countries continue to be disbursed in accordance with established policies. The Ministry noted that once the new tax is reflected in the students’ official invoices, payments will be made to accommodate the additional cost.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted financial support for Maldivian students studying abroad.
