Hoadedhdhoo Council has departed for India as part of a delegation from the Local Government Ministry to gain expertise for the ‘Smart Hoadedhdhoo’ project, a ten-year initiative aimed at digitalising the island.

The delegation will take part in the ‘Smart City Mission’ training programme in Mussoorie, located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The visit, which began on Monday, will continue until 15 November.

During the trip, the delegation is scheduled to visit key cities, including Dehradun and Chandigarh, to gain hands-on experience in smart city development. In addition, the group will visit the Municipal Council and the World Trade Centre tower in New Delhi.

As part of the ‘Smart Hoadedhdhoo’ initiative, the Council plans to launch an online portal, ‘Vaaruge’, in December. The portal will provide digital access to all Council services, including payment processing and complaint submissions.

The project will also see the replacement of existing streetlights with solar-powered alternatives and the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations across the island to enhance security and monitoring.

Hoadedhdhoo Council met with the High Commission of India in the Maldives on 14 November to discuss technical and practical support for the project. Following the meeting, the High Commission agreed to facilitate visits to smart cities during the current trip and to engage in further discussions to secure funding for the second phase of the project.
