Housing Minister Addresses Project Delays and Future Plans

Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has addressed concerns regarding stalled projects initiated by the previous administration and the current administration’s plans to complete them.
During a parliamentary session today, Dr. Haidar responded to questions from Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa of the main opposition MDP. Moosa inquired about the commencement of new projects and whether the current administration would transfer land plots and flats awarded by the former administration to their rightful recipients.
Dr. Haidar assured that no changes would be made to the recipients of land or flats without verifying their legitimacy. He emphasised that the handover process would continue as planned.
Resolving Stalled Projects a Priority Before New Initiatives
Addressing criticisms about the lack of new projects, Dr. Haidar explained that many initiatives started by the previous administration were halted when the current government took office. He stated that resolving these issues and completing the stalled projects is the administration’s priority before starting new ones.
The administration aims to develop 85,000 housing units over its five-year term, with 30,000 units already announced under the Rasmale’ project.
Dr. Haidar also provided updates on the land plots awarded during the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. He cited ongoing work on the ThilaMale’ Bridge, which had damaged property markers, and the need to revise land use plans in GulhiFalhu as reasons for the delays. The Minister indicated that land plots from GulhiFalhu would be issued once reclamation work is completed, expected by September next year.
Handover of Hulhumale’ Phase II Land Plots to be Completed by October
Additionally, Dr. Haidar confirmed that the handover of land plots from Hulhumale’ Phase II, awarded under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme, would be completed by October this year. He noted that some plots were awarded from areas not yet reclaimed or intersected with roads, and these would be converted to land plots through reclamation.
He further stated that the handover of land plots from Hulhumale’ Phase III would be completed by November, with 624 plots already handed over and additional plots planned for distribution.
The current administration has reaffirmed its commitment to transferring land plots and flats to their rightful recipients, addressing public concerns and protests related to delays in the previous administration’s housing schemes.
