The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development has announced that the list of recipients for 4,000 housing units under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme will be published in November, rather than this month as initially promised.

The units are being constructed in Hulhumale’ Phase II by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) and represent the first housing project launched under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ initiative, a social housing programme introduced by the previous administration.

The original list of recipients, issued during the final days of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration, has been under scrutiny by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Following an investigation into complaints regarding the list, the ACC ordered a suspension of the flat issuance but subsequently permitted the Housing Ministry to proceed in February.

Since then, the Housing Ministry has been reviewing the list, with Minister Dr. Ali Haidar stating in July that it would be released in October. However, in a statement released on Monday, the ministry indicated that it requires additional time to complete the re-evaluation of all application forms.

The ministry aims to publish the list “before the end of the second week of November this year.”

The government faces increasing pressure due to delays in the allocation of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme, resulting in a series of protests in Male’.

The original recipient list generated approximately 325 complaints, with the ACC determining that 59.6 per cent of the recipients failed to meet the necessary eligibility criteria.
