Housing Ministry Denies Allegations of Political Interference in Flat Allocation

Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has denied allegations circulating on social media that Members of Parliament (MPs) and other politicians are influencing the selection process for beneficiaries of 4,000 flats being developed in Hulhumalé as part of the previous administration’s ‘Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme.’

In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to a fair and transparent allocation process, assuring the public that external influences will not affect the ongoing re-evaluation of applications. The review was launched after complaints were lodged with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) regarding the original list of recipients published under the prior government.

To address concerns, the Ministry highlighted that the Housing Advisory Committee and the Housing Consultative Committee of the Malé City Council are meticulously assessing all applications to ensure the flats are allocated to the most deserving individuals.

“The people are assured that no one will influence the re-evaluation of the flat list,” the statement read. “The Ministry’s objective is to ensure that the most deserving people get flats under the scheme.”

The Ministry also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, cautioning against the politicisation of a matter that affects the housing aspirations of many citizens.

Despite these assurances, public frustration over housing delays continues to mount. Protests have erupted in response to the postponed release of the revised flat recipient list, which is now expected by the end of the month.

Protesters have also voiced discontent over the government’s refusal to honour land awards made under the previous administration’s landlord scheme, accusing officials of political bias and mismanagement in housing projects.

Opposition figures have intensified their criticism, calling for greater accountability and transparency in addressing the nation’s growing housing needs.
