The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as “feels like” temperatures across the Maldives rise to between 34°C and 36°C.

In an advisory issued today, HPA advised the public to remain well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and to wear light, loose clothing. People were also encouraged to seek shade whenever possible and remain alert to early warning signs of overheating, including dizziness, weakness, headaches, and excessive thirst.

The agency further said that infants, children, older adults, pregnant women, and outdoor workers must exercise extra caution as heat conditions intensify.

The advisory follows earlier warnings from the Maldives Meteorological Service, which said “feels like” temperatures are expected to rise above normal levels during March and April.

According to the meteorological agency, the two months are typically the warmest period in the Maldives. During this time, wind speeds tend to decrease while skies remain largely clear, contributing to sustained high humidity levels.

MMS explained that these conditions intensify how heat is experienced by the human body, often making temperatures feel significantly higher than recorded air temperatures. The agency also noted that the diurnal temperature range—the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures—narrows during this period, limiting nighttime cooling.

Temperatures in April are expected to remain slightly above long-term climatological averages, the agency added.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious as the country enters the peak of its hot season.
