HPA Raises Alarm Over Excessive Salt Consumption in the Maldives

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has voiced concern over the excessive salt consumption among the Maldivian population, with over 70% exceeding the recommended daily intake.

This trend poses significant health risks, according to the agency. A survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) through the STEP programme revealed that 70.3% of Maldivians consume more salt than is deemed healthy.

High salt intake is not only linked to elevated blood pressure but is also associated with a weakened immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections and illnesses. Studies further suggest that excessive salt consumption raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes, particularly among individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions.

The WHO recommends that daily salt intake should not exceed 5 grams, roughly equivalent to a teaspoon. However, many people surpass this limit regularly. The HPA emphasises that reducing salt consumption can significantly benefit cardiovascular health. They suggest replacing salt with alternatives such as herbs or honey and advise checking nutritional labels on packaged foods to monitor salt levels.

Reducing salt intake, the agency highlights, can lead to better overall health outcomes and lower the risk of chronic diseases.
