The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised Maldivian pilgrims travelling for Hajj and Umrah to complete the required vaccinations before their departure.

The recommendation is intended to protect pilgrims from infectious diseases as millions of people from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage. It also aims to reduce the risk of spreading diseases upon their return to the Maldives.

The mandatory vaccines for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims include the meningococcal conjugate vaccine, the influenza vaccine, and the oral polio vaccine. The HPA has emphasised that all Hajj and Umrah service providers, as well as individual travellers, must ensure vaccinations are completed within the stipulated timeframe. The vaccines must be administered at least 14 days before departure to ensure full protection.

Vaccination requirements are determined based on the prevalence of diseases and the risk of transmission in the Maldives. The HPA has stated that these requirements may change in response to advancements in vaccine development or shifts in disease prevalence, with any updates to be made public accordingly.
