HPA Urges Public Caution Amidst Flooding

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public warning, urging residents to remain vigilant and take preventative measures to mitigate the spread of diseases amidst ongoing severe weather and flooding in the Maldives.
HPA highlighted the increased risk of disease transmission due to flooding, overflowing junctions, sewage discharge, and the accumulation of rainwater.

The agency warned that the likelihood of illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, diseases spread by cat and rat faeces, fungal respiratory infections, and mosquito-borne diseases—including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika—could rise significantly under these conditions.

To safeguard public health, the HPA has issued several recommendations. They advise avoiding stepping into floodwaters where possible. If entry into floodwaters is unavoidable, the use of waterproof materials is recommended. Individuals involved in flood drainage and disinfection are urged to strictly adhere to HPA guidelines.
The HPA also advises washing hands frequently with soap and water. For drinking and cooking, the use of boiled rainwater or bottled water is recommended. It is also important to empty any vessels or areas in homes and yards that may retain water.
The HPA strongly advises the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with these diseases.
