The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the protests targeting First Lady Fazna Ahmed during her door to door campaign at the Hiyaa flats for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s second-round presidential election campaign.

Supporters of the PPM/PNC coalition expressed their opposition by protesting against First Lady Fazna and resorting to the use of abusive language upon her arrival at the Hiyaa residences.

In a statement released via Twitter, the HRCM asserted, “It is the legal right of every candidate to seek support during elections. Consequently, it is the responsibility of every individual to show due respect for the electoral rights and campaign activities of the candidates. We call upon all to uphold these rights and conduct themselves in accordance with established rules and regulations when supporting their chosen candidates.”

Furthermore, HRCM has appealed to the public to refrain from engaging in any actions that could compromise the dignity and conscience of others while expressing their views and support during political activities.

The Commission has also called upon political parties and leaders to discourage and disavow such behavior.
