HRCM to Assess Accessibility of Polling Stations for Voters with Disabilities

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has announced its intention to evaluate the accessibility of polling stations in the upcoming presidential election to ensure that people with disabilities can exercise their right to vote without hindrance.

Speaking with PSM News, HRCM President Mariyam Muna revealed that a pre-election monitoring assessment has already taken place. This involved teams traveling to various atolls across the Maldives to review the level of preparation and assess the extent of public awareness regarding the electoral process.

Muna also highlighted the commission’s ongoing discussions with the National Advisory Committee on Elections regarding the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the proposed solutions that have been put forward.
Furthermore, Muna underscored HRCM’s commitment to closely monitor the electoral process, specifically focusing on whether the polling stations are accessible to those with disabilities.
Additionally, she issued a reminder to all candidates and political parties to cease campaign activities once the stipulated deadline has passed.
The move to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities in the electoral process marks a significant step towards ensuring equal participation and inclusivity in the democratic system of the Maldives.
