The government has inaugurated the Hulhumalé Annex-2 Powerhouse in preparation for this year’s peak electricity consumption season.
The inauguration ceremony took place on last Saturday night, with State Electric Company (STELCO) Managing Director Hussain Fahumy hoisting the company’s flag and Deputy Managing Director Aishath Muzna raising the national flag.
During the event, Fahumy commissioned one of the newly installed generators at the facility. According to STELCO, the powerhouse will feature 12 generator sets, each with a capacity of 1.6 megawatts.
Currently, six generators have been commissioned, while five additional units have already been acquired and are set to be operational before the end of Ramadan. Once fully completed, the powerhouse will have a total capacity of 19.2 megawatts.
STELCO anticipates that electricity demand will peak after Ramadan as temperatures rise. Speaking at the inauguration, Fahumy highlighted the rapid completion of essential work by STELCO staff, describing it as a major national effort achieved within a short timeframe.
He noted that employees cleared a 48,000-square-foot land area, removed approximately 200 tonnes of waste, levelled the site, connected the new powerhouse to the existing Annex-1 facility in Hulhumalé, and installed fuel pipelines and electrical cables between the two stations—all within nine days.
