Hulhumalé Hospital has signed an agreement with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) to significantly enhance the Emergency Room (ER) capacity at Hulhumalé Hospital.

Under the agreement, RDC is tasked with completing the civil works and interior finishing of the ER within 60 days, enabling the hospital to expand its capacity and improve the range of emergency services offered.

In a statement, Hulhumalé Hospital revealed that its ER and General Outpatient Department (GOPD) now cater to over 250,000 patients annually. Despite this, the current ER has only seven beds. The new project will add 14 emergency beds equipped with modern facilities, including a dedicated resuscitation area for critical cases.

“These figures highlight the immense demand for Hulhumalé Hospital’s services. The expansion will help address this pressing need,” the hospital said.

In addition to the ER upgrade, the government has announced plans to construct a new 15-storey building adjacent to the existing six-storey hospital structure. Meanwhile, work is underway to establish an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within the current building. Both facilities are expected to become operational later this year.
