Established in 2012, the Hulhumalé Magistrate Court has faced ongoing questions over its legitimacy. The Judicature Act specifies that Male’ is to have superior courts, while islands outside Male’ are to have magistrate courts. Meanwhile, the Constitution recognises Hulhumalé and Vilimalé as districts of Male’.

In 2022, the Judicial Service Commission initiated efforts to dissolve the court, and the then-Attorney General, Ibrahim Riffath, confirmed that his office was drafting legislative changes to facilitate this. Despite these developments, the court remains operational.
