The Hulhumalé Phase 3 land reclamation project has reached 77.8 per cent completion and is progressing in line with planned timelines, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

MACL said reclamation works have covered 49 hectares to date. The project resumed in November after delays caused by revisions to the Hulhumalé Master Plan. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) oversees the project, while Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC) carries out the on-site works.

The reclamation project began in September 2023 but came to a halt last year after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered a suspension in response to a mass coral bleaching event affecting the Maldives. Authorities resumed the works in 2024 after the EPA granted approval.

Hulhumalé Phase 3 forms a key part of the government’s efforts to ease housing shortages in the Greater Malé region. The reclaimed land will support the construction of housing flats and other residential developments to meet growing demand in the area.
