Hulhumalé Reef Incident: EPA Imposes MVR 29 Million Fine on Dubai Marine Operator

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Middle East Marine LLC with MVR29,201,946 for damaging Hulhumale’ northern reef when it ran aground earlier this year.
The tugboat “ANADI” (IMO No: 9080871) and the barge “AM MANUMIT” (Official No: 400923) ran aground on February 21st.
In a press release today, EPA announced that the company was informed of the fine imposed under Regulation No. 2011/R-9, which pertains to penalties and compensation for environmental damage, enacted under Act No. 4/93 (Environmental Protection and Conservation Act of Dhvehi Raajje) on October 1st. The company is required to pay the fine by October 30th.

A joint survey conducted in collaboration with surveyors appointed by the vessel owners found that an area of 1,159 acres of the reef suffered significant damage due to the incident.
Both vessels were successfully removed from the area on 23 April.
