President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that human rights are the foundation of peace and sustainable development, stressing that these rights are not abstract ideals but essential protections that must be guaranteed for people to live with dignity and hope.
He made the remarks in a message issued yesterday to mark Human Rights Day, observed annually on 10 December.
According to the President’s Office, in his message, President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to upholding human dignity, justice, and equality. He highlighted the country’s progress in promoting and protecting human rights both domestically and internationally, noting efforts to expand access to essential public services, strengthen legal and institutional frameworks, and safeguard vulnerable communities while upholding fundamental freedoms.
President Muizzu also emphasised the Maldives’ active role at the United Nations Human Rights Council, where the country continues to advocate for stronger global protections and contribute to key resolutions and dialogues. He said this engagement reflects the Maldives’ belief that human rights transcend borders and require collective action.
Addressing the situation in Palestine, President Muizzu said the indivisibility of human rights means they cannot be upheld globally while denied to any segment of humanity. He described the ongoing denial of fundamental rights to Palestinians as a grave violation of justice, human dignity, and international law, reaffirming the Maldives’ support for their pursuit of their rights, including the right to self-determination.
The President concluded by calling on the public to renew their commitment to justice, equality, and compassion on the occasion of Human Rights Day.
