The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced the installation of a solar-diesel battery hybrid power system in Fehendhoo, Baa Atoll, as part of efforts to strengthen energy sustainability in the Maldives.
The project includes a 250 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system combined with a 537 kilowatt battery energy storage system. The hybrid setup is designed to improve the reliability of electricity supply, ensure grid stability and significantly reduce dependence on diesel-powered generation.
Once the system becomes operational, it is expected to save an estimated 117,697 litres of diesel each year and cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 288 tonnes, supporting national environmental protection objectives.
The initiative forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s energy policy, which targets generating 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
The government has stated that similar projects are expected to reduce fuel import costs while reinforcing the Maldives’ long-term commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
