The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) Group of Hospitals has announced the launch of a new Hybrid Operating Theatre, equipped with a catheterisation laboratory, at Dharumavantha Hospital in Malé.

This advanced facility is expected to enhance medical services for neurological, cardiac, and peripheral interventional procedures, bringing world-class healthcare options to the Maldives. The announcement was made via X, where IGMH shared their excitement about the new facility.

Dharumavantha Hospital, a 25-storey facility built during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom, was completed at a cost exceeding MVR 2.1 billion. Despite its modern infrastructure, the theatre on the 11th floor remained unused for six years due to technical and logistical issues.

IGMH CEO Ibrahim Haleem explained in an interview with Mihaaru, a local media outlet, that the prolonged disuse had affected some circuits within the theatre’s motherboard. Spare parts were recently imported to repair the equipment, enabling the theatre to become operational last week.

“We commenced services after equipping the facility three times,” Haleem shared. “Now, neurosurgeries are being carried out in the cath lab, and cardiac procedures are also underway. In the future, this facility will be dedicated to endovascular and neurosurgical procedures.”

To ensure safety and readiness, Haleem explained that IGMH replaced all malfunctioning parts instead of opting for temporary fixes, as the theatre will play a significant role in providing public healthcare.

The facility on the 11th floor, referred to as DH11, is now fully operational, including all ten ICU beds, of which only four had previously been in use. Plans are also in place to expand stroke patient treatments at the facility. IGMH’s 14 ICU beds often reach capacity, requiring new patients to wait until others stabilise.

The new theatre’s capabilities are expected to relieve some of this demand, particularly for complex cardiac and neurological procedures, and to allow the hospital’s other four theatres to focus on general surgeries.
