IGMH, the main government hospital in Malé, announced the achievement on Wednesday. Details regarding the surgery have been requested by local media but have not yet been provided by the hospital.
Endoscopic spine surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat conditions such as slipped discs, nerve compression, and certain types of back pain. The technique involves the use of a small endoscope—a tube equipped with a camera and surgical instruments—allowing surgeons to access the spine through a very small incision.
Compared with traditional open surgery, the endoscopic method is associated with less post-operative pain, faster recovery times, smaller scars, reduced tissue damage, and shorter hospital stays.
IGMH described the successful surgery as another milestone for neurosurgery in the Maldives.
