Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, representing The Democrats, has emerged as the candidate in the presidential primary with an overwhelming majority, securing 3,041 votes, which accounts for an impressive 94.94 percent of the total ballots cast.

As the sole contender for this year’s presidential election within The Democrats, Ilyas was the only candidate vying for the party’s nomination.

In accordance with the party’s constitution, officially registered with the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) on the 12th of this month, a show-cause vote among party members was mandated since only one candidate had come forward for the presidential primary. As per the party’s constitution, if a candidate manages to secure 10 percent of the members’ votes, they are deemed eligible to become the party’s presidential candidate.

The provisional results of the Democratic presidential primary reveal that a total of 3,208 individuals participated in the polls conducted from 2 pm to 6 pm yesterday.

Out of the total voters, an impressive 3,041 individuals cast their votes in favor of Ilyas as the presidential candidate, while 153 voters opposed his nomination. Furthermore, nine votes were declared invalid by the party.

Hassan Latheef, the interim chairman of The Democrats, had previously stated that the party’s presidential primary would be conducted across all regions of Maldives and even include members from around the world. To ensure broad participation, the party had also set up an online voting system.

The Democratic party also offered an opportunity for those who signed up on the day of the primary to partake in the voting process, ensuring that all newly registered members could exercise their right to vote in the selection of the party’s presidential candidate.
