The raids were carried out by a taskforce as part of an ongoing joint operation aimed at addressing irregular migration.
On Sunday, the taskforce conducted raids at four food establishments in Malé, including cafes, teashops, and takeaways. Six expatriates were apprehended for working without valid visas. Immigration officials did not disclose further details about the detainees, including their gender or nationality.
The crackdown on irregular migration, which was initiated in 2023, has resulted in the deportation of over 6,000 expatriates from the Maldives. In addition, the government has been running ‘Operation Kurangi,’ a programme designed to collect biometric data from all expatriates in the country.
On March 19, the Ministry of Homeland Security announced that more than 100,000 expatriates, including 65,000 from the Greater Malé area, have had their biometric data collected since the programme began on May 2, 2024.
The government has stated that the completion of ‘Operation Kurangi’ will provide a permanent solution to irregular migration.
