Maldives Immigration has introduced a real-time maritime tracking system to enhance port surveillance and strengthen operational capacity at Malé Port, the country’s main seaborne entry point.

The new platform, known as the Universal Automatic Identification System (UAIS), is now fully operational through the agency’s Seaport Division. It allows for continuous monitoring of all vessels within a 30-nautical-mile radius of Malé Port. The deployment marks a shift from previously manual, labour-intensive methods of gathering vessel data.

Before the implementation of UAIS, estimated arrival times were compiled manually through coordination with the Maldives Customs Service and Maldives Ports Limited. This process often required staff to liaise directly with multiple agencies.

The new system enables immigration officers to monitor vessel locations and movement schedules with greater accuracy and efficiency. It is expected to ease administrative workloads and improve responsiveness in port operations.

According to Maldives Immigration, UAIS aligns with internationally recognised maritime protocols and mirrors systems used in major global ports to support maritime safety and procedural standards.

Beyond its surveillance function, the system is also anticipated to streamline clearance operations at Malé Port and raise the overall standard of services provided to incoming maritime traffic.
