Inauguration of the Maldives Ocean Hackathon

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna inaugurated the “The Maldives Ocean Hackathon” at a ceremony held yesterday at the Islamic Centre.
“The Maldives Ocean Hackathon” is the largest prize-winning hackathon in the country, with a prize amounting upto USD 10,000 in local currency.
The “Maldives Ocean Hackathon” is a two-day event during which individuals or groups collaborate within a brief timeframe to generate solutions, frequently in the shape of software, apps, or prototypes.
“The Maldives Ocean Hackathon” is an initiative of the Digital Maldives for Adaptation, Decentralization and Diversification (DMED) project of the Environment Ministry under the World Bank’s grant assistance.
Minister Shauna’s speech underlined the need to address climate change’s repercussions on island nations like the Maldives known for their delicate ecosystems.
She emphasised that timely identification of these changes holds the key to effective mitigation. Regularly recorded and accurately collected data was highlighted as pivotal for actions by technical and policy stakeholders.
The Minister further accentuated the role of digital technology as the linchpin to addressing this challenge, attributing the hackathon’s significance to the culmination of two years of effort to harmonise climate change and technology.
In a briefing, Mohamed Sharif, the Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, acquainted the participants with the core aspects of the hackathon. Scheduled to unfold from October 15 to 17 at Crossroads Maldives, the event extends an invitation to teams comprising 3 to 5 members.
Interested participants can secure their entry through the hackathon’s dedicated website, oceanhack.mv with the final registration being on september 30.
Executing this hackathon is a collaborative effort, orchestrated by Dhiraagu, CROSSROADS Maldives, Villa College, NooRaajje Program, and Public Service Media. Adding technical prowess to the event are Microsoft and X Prize.
