Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) Vice-President Ismail Habeeb announced that 6,223 individuals residing abroad have re-registered to cast their votes in the upcoming Saturday’s polls.
This figure marks a surge compared to the 3,327 overseas voters in the initial round held on the 9th of this month.
A total of 14 ballot boxes will be deployed across several countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the UK, and the UAE.
The overall eligible voter count for the presidential election’s first round was 282,395. As the second round approaches, an additional 408 individuals have become eligible to cast their votes.
To accommodate the increased re-registration, an additional 12 polling stations will be established for this round.
During the first round of the presidential election, the PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, secured the most votes, amassing a total of 101,635 votes. Meanwhile, the second-largest candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, garnered 86,161 votes.
However, neither candidate secured the required 50 percent majority to win the election outright, leading to the second round of voting between these two candidates scheduled for Saturday.
