IndiGo Airlines has officially commenced operations from Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA), becoming the eighth airline to use the new terminal and the first Indian carrier to do so.

A ceremony was held at the terminal to mark the occasion, with the participation of Ahmed Faseeh, Controller General of Immigration. The airline opened its check-in counters and distributed gift bags to the 218 passengers travelling on its outbound service. The inbound flight, carrying 229 passengers, was received with a ceremonial water salute and traditional cultural performances.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline and the second-largest in Asia, launched services to the Maldives on 15 November 2018.

With the addition of IndiGo, the airlines now operating from Terminal 1 are Maldivian, Air Arabia, Beyond, Fitz Air, Beijing Capital Airlines, Batik Air, and Bangkok Airways.

Terminal 1, inaugurated on 26 July, began operations with Maldivian as its first carrier.
