Island Aviation, the operator of Maldivian, has announced that the inflight use of power banks will be banned on all Maldivian flights, covering both domestic and international routes.

The company stated that the decision has been taken to enhance the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft in light of concerns associated with carrying power banks onboard.

In addition, Island Aviation has introduced new guidelines governing the carriage of power banks. Each passenger will be allowed to carry a maximum of two power banks, with each not exceeding a capacity of 100Wh. Passengers must carry these power banks on their person, in a seat pocket, or under the seat. Storing them in overhead bins or checked baggage will not be permitted.

Charging devices or recharging power banks during flights is strictly prohibited. To prevent short circuits or accidental activation, power banks must be kept in their original packaging or have their terminals insulated, such as with tape or by placing them in a protective pouch or bag.

Similar restrictions have recently been introduced by several international airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Air Asia, China Airlines, and Tiger Taiwan.
