An inmate at Hulhumale’ Prison has passed away at a hospital in Male’. Ahmed Ijaz, 44, from Windmaage, R. Maduvvari, had been serving a three-year prison term at Hulhumale’ Prison for drug-related offences.

The Maldives Correctional Service confirmed the death in a statement issued last evening. According to the announcement, Ijaz was admitted to Hulhumale’ Hospital on March 8, following respiratory difficulties. After initial treatment at the hospital’s Emergency Room, he was transferred to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ the following day.

Reports from the Correctional Service indicate that Ijaz was a tuberculosis (TB) patient and his deteriorating health required admission to the Intensive Care Unit at IGMH, where he later required ventilator support. Sadly, he passed away around 11:30 pm yesterday.

Ijaz had been transferred to Hulhumale’ Prison on March 7, as reported by the Correctional Service. The institution promptly notified his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission regarding his demise.
