The Islamic Development Bank has provided USD 400,000, equivalent to MVR 6.16 million, in grant support to strengthen the Maldives’ health sector.

The funding was secured through the World Health Organization’s Health Impact Investment Platform and will be used to enhance primary healthcare services, improve referral systems between health centres and regional hospitals, and strengthen human resource capacity.

According to the Ministry of Health, the grant will also support the development of health information systems and help address climate-related challenges affecting the health sector.

The support was announced during the Maldives National Universal Health Coverage Forum, which was held at Kurumba Resort over the weekend.

More than 100 participants attended the forum, including representatives from the national health sector, private healthcare providers, development banks such as the World Bank and the Islamic Development Bank, and international organisations.

Universal health coverage aims to ensure that all individuals have access to adequate healthcare services regardless of their location.

The forum focused on strengthening health services, refining health policies, and building resilient health systems at both individual and community levels to support the country’s national health goals.
