Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said the Maldives is facing nationwide financial hardship and stressed the need to re-evaluate the registry of the poor and needy.
Speaking at the second International Zakat Economic Conference (INZEC) held in Malé on Saturday, the Minister said assistance provided through the registry must be expanded in light of the difficult living conditions faced by citizens. He added that identifying the truly poor and needy requires careful consideration at a time when the entire population is affected by financial difficulties.
Dr Shaheem highlighted education, healthcare and access to shelter as essential needs that must be prioritised. He noted that the Zakat Fund could play a crucial role in broadening support to address these areas, as it is the only pillar of Islam that can be adapted to respond to changing circumstances.
The Minister revealed that work has begun to expand the scope of the Zakat Fund. A detailed paper is being prepared for submission to the Cabinet, outlining how the Fund could provide additional assistance for registered poor and needy individuals, particularly in medical treatment, education and housing.
His remarks on the financial struggles of ministers and members of parliament have drawn attention, as these public officials continue to receive some of the highest salaries and allowances in the country. Concerns over political pay and the expansion of political positions remain a matter of public debate, with widespread criticism directed at MPs for perceived lack of productivity despite their substantial earnings. A recent petition signed by many citizens has called for greater accountability in this regard.
