Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has rejoined the Adhaalath Party, marking his return to a political affiliation after several years of being unaffiliated.

He announced his decision to contest the party’s upcoming presidential election later this year. Dr Shaheem had previously been a senior member and founding figure of the Adhaalath Party, serving for 12 years before becoming the Minister of Islamic Affairs under President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s administration.

Dr Shaheem made the announcement on Facebook on Wednesday, revealing that he had submitted his membership form to rejoin the party. His return comes after he had been unaffiliated with any political party following the dissolution of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which he had joined after leaving Adhaalath.

His decision to rejoin the party has been welcomed by several prominent figures within Adhaalath, including the party’s Scholarly Committee President Sheikh Ilyas Hussain, Vice-President Abdulla Rasheed, and members Sheikh Mohamed Anil and Dr Iyaz Abdul Latheef.

However, the party’s president, Sheikh Imran Abdulla, who currently resides in Thailand and remains distanced from active political affairs, expressed reservations. While he welcomed Dr Shaheem’s return, Imran called for the minister to resign from his post and pursue the leadership of the party.
