Former President Abdulla Yameen’s lawyer and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed have accused Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem of delaying the appeal hearing for Yameen.
Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence for the V. Aarah case, which he is now appealing.
Jameel expressed his concern over the delay in the appeal hearing, citing it as a violation of Yameen’s rights claiming that Prosecutor General Shameem was involved in the delay in collaboration with certain individuals, asserting that he had evidence to support these allegations.
However, Jameel did not specify the identity of these individuals, promising to reveal more details at a later time.
Furthermore, Jameel called for the court to take action against the state, alleging obstruction of justice in the case.
In response to these allegations, a representative from the prosecutor’s office denied any intentional delay in the proceedings. The official clarified that the case had reached a stage where lawyers needed to respond to the judges’ questions, but a delay occurred due to one of the lawyers falling seriously ill after preparing for the trial.
They stated that they had submitted a medical certificate to the court and received permission to adjourn the trial temporarily. The prosecutor’s office official also emphasised that there was no intention to delay the appeal, characterising Jameel’s claims as baseless.
Yameen is currently under house arrest due to health reasons, faces additional pending charges in the Criminal Court.
