The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed former Civil Court judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa as a judge of the High Court of Maldives.
The appointment letter was formally handed over by JSC President Hussain Riza Adam during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court on Sunday evening.
Jameel holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours and brings to the bench more than 15 years of judicial experience. He began his career as magistrate of L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate Court in September 2003, a post he held until January 2009. He then served as a Civil Court judge from February 2009 until resigning in February 2019, after which he practised law privately.
Alongside Jameel, the JSC had also selected Mohamed Shaheed, a former deputy minister and known political activist, for a High Court judgeship. However, Shaheed subsequently withdrew his nomination following public criticism over his political ties, despite being among the top-scoring candidates in the JSC’s evaluation process.
Shaheed, who holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours from the Islamic University of Maldives, previously served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and also worked in private law practice. He was notably active in political circles and had taken part in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign activities.
The two positions on the High Court bench became vacant earlier this year when two sitting judges were elevated to the Supreme Court.
