Japan and UNODC Donate CCTV Equipment to Strengthen Police Service
The Government of Japan, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), officially donated CCTV camera equipment to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
In a handover ceremony held at Iskandhar Koshi in Male’ City, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, presented the equipment to Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, who expressed gratitude for Japan and UNODC’s ongoing support in strengthening the MPS’s capabilities.

During the ceremony, Commissioner Shujau acknowledged Japan and UNODC’s consistent contributions towards enhancing the Maldives police force’s infrastructure and resources. As a token of appreciation, a commemorative plaque was presented to Japan and UNODC in recognition of their assistance.
The equipment, valued at approximately USD 2.5 million, will be used to combat drug-related crimes, illegal activities in the fisheries sector, and other maritime offences across the Maldives. The new resources are expected to bolster MPS’s capacity to detect, investigate, and prosecute crimes, contributing to improved safety in Male’ and on other islands nationwide.
This latest contribution follows prior donations from UNODC with Japan’s support, which have included road and marine vessels, drug field test kits, precursor field test kits, and handheld Raman field identification kits. The Embassy of Japan in the Maldives noted that this assistance reflects a shared commitment to security and development in the region.
